Reading a Financial Offer the Way a Regulator Would

A printed document with highlighted sections and a pen

Regulators check offers in a fairly consistent way. Here is that check, written so you can do it yourself before depositing.

1. Is there a written term for the headline figure?

A number with a document behind it can be traced. A number without one is a description of a hope. The cap and the cycle are what 1VIT publishes.

2. What is the maximum loss, stated plainly?

Ask the question and read the answer carefully. A document that cannot answer it is not a document you should rely on — the risk disclosure is the place this is written down.

3. Who holds the money, and under what rule?

Named, regulated, and reachable. The six questions.

4. What is the cost of getting out?

Find it before you enter. Time, fees, and any penalty for ending a commitment early. It is the number you will need precisely when you cannot think clearly. The process here is described in full.

5. What is NOT covered?

Every honest document has an exclusions section. Read it. Losses from ignoring the terms, from misrepresentation, or from fraud are not covered by any product — and an operator who says otherwise is telling you something.

6. Can the product be changed by the operator?

If the terms can be amended at the operator's discretion, ask how and with what notice. A product with published terms is worth more than one with impressive promises.

And the last check, which is not on the list

Read it twice, and if anything is unclear, ask through the Help Center before depositing. The ease of getting a straight answer is itself a finding.
